BSU students win six gold medals at the International Mathematics Competition

7 August 2026

Students from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (FAMCS) at BSU have won six gold medals at the 33rd International Mathematics Competition (IMC-2026). The top honours went to second-year students Vasily Denisov and Gleb Stepanichev, third-year students Matvey Vylezhzhanin and Vseslav Krasnenko, and fourth-year students Matvey Zorko and Nikita Shutro. The team was led by representatives of the Department of Higher Mathematics and the Department of Intelligent Systems at the FAMCS: Senior Lecturer Sergei Chernov and Associate Professor Anna Zadorozhnyuk.

Participants were required to solve 10 problems spanning algebra, mathematical analysis, combinatorics, analytical geometry, and number theory. The Belarusian team delivered one of its best performances in over 25 years of competing in the Competition. Ranking second out of 135 university teams in gold medal count, they were outpaced only by the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

The BSU team has been competing in the Competition since 2001, amassing 103 medals, including 52 golds, seven Grand Prix awards, and overall first-place finishes. BSU has also been crowned world champions twice in the overall team standings.

Held from July 27 to August 3 in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, the competition brought together around 500 participants from 48 countries.
